Darjeeling, Peace Pagoda, or Darjeeling One of the Peace Pagodas was created to serve as a focal point for people of all races and religious beliefs to enable them work together in the pursuit of world peace. It is situated in the West Bengal state of India’s town of Darjeeling. It was constructed under the direction of NichidatsuFujii (1885-1985), a Japanese Buddhist monk and the founder of the Nipponzan-Myhji Buddhist Order, who oversaw the construction of the majority of the other Peace Pagodas.
NichidatsuFujii set the pagoda’s foundation stone on November 3, 1972, and on November 1, 1992, it was officially opened. The pagoda took 36 months to build and was designed by M. Ohka. It houses Maitreya Buddha as well as the other four Buddha incarnations. The pagoda measures 23 metres in diameter and 28.5 metres in height (94 feet) (75 ft). A few kilometres outside of the town of Darjeeling, in the Jalapahar hills of Darjeeling, is where you’ll find the Pagoda.
