One of Kolkata’s best architectural creations, the Victoria Memorial should be at the front of someone’s list of places to see. The Victoria Memorial, located in the heart of Kolkata’s bustling metropolis, serves as a reminder of the splendour of earlier colonial times.

The monument is made of white marble and is a great illustration of the absolute majesty that draws in and astounds its visitors. In order to create a “stately” memorial for Queen Victoria, the first Empress of Lord George Curzon, British India, the first Marquess Curzon of Kedleston and Viceroy of India, came up with the design for the monument.who had passed away.As a museum housing authentic items which once owned to the Empress Queen, the monument was originally built as a memorial. In addition to them, the museum showcases a wealth of priceless original manuscripts and paintings, in addition to artefacts from the governor and viceroy admirals who held significant managerial posts throughout the Raj. There are 64 acres total between the memorial gallery’s building and the gardens that surround it.

The memorial is 200 feet tall, including the “Angel of Victory,” which is perched above the main dome at a height of 16 feet. The “Angel of Victory” stands hung above the main dome on colossal ball bearings that move in reaction to the wind.The central dome is surrounded by four allegorical sculptures: Art, Architecture, Justice, and Charity. Above the front facade or north porch, three further allegorical sculptures are positioned: Motherhood, Learning, and Prudence. All of the mythological sculptures were created in Italy and transported there.

Victoria Memorial Gallery Inside View

The enormous museum comprises 25 distinct, enormous galleries, including, to name a few, the Calcutta Gallery, the Arms and Armoury Gallery, the Queens Hall Gallery, the National Leaders Gallery, the Sculpture Gallery, and the Portrait Gallery. The museum houses about 30,000 priceless artefacts, along with rare pictures and Images depicting the life of the queen by Western and Indian artists.

In addition to the literature on Thumri and Kathak dance song by Wajid Ali Shah, the museum also houses the greatest collection of ancient copies of William Shakespeare, The Arabian Nights and Ommar Khayyum’s Rubaiyat.

The museum repository also houses a beautiful manuscript copy of Abu’l-Fazl ibn Mubarak’s Ain-i-Akbari, which he wrote while serving as the court historian of Emperor Akbar.The book provides a thorough statistical analysis of Akbar’s rule and imperial structures.
